- W140113638 abstract "The non-NMDA receptors consist of 2 subgroups: a-amino-3-hydroxy-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) and kainate (Hollmann and Heinemann, 1994; and review chapters in this book). In the central nervous system (CNS), AMPA receptors are the glutamate-gated channels responsible for “general-purpose” fast excitatory transmission at most synapses. The function of kainate receptors is still unknown, but they are present at many postsynaptic densities throughout the brain and often colocalize with AMPA receptors (Feldmeyer and Cull-Candy, 1994; Henley, 1994; Petralia et al., 1994; Roche and Huganir, 1995; Siegel et al., 1995). AMPA receptors are heteromeric assemblies of GluR-A-D (GluR-1–4) subunits (Boulter et al., 1990; Keinanen et al., 1990; Wenthold et al., 1992). The presence of the GluR-B subunit in the complex precludes Ca++ permeability (Hollmann et al., 1991; Burnashev et al., 1992b). Each AMPA receptor subunit exists as both a flip and a flop variant determined by mutually exclusive alternative splicing of a 38 amino acid-encoding exon that can determine properties of receptor desensitization (Sommer et al., 1990; the detailed consequences for receptor function of incorporating a flip or flop module are reported by Mosbacher et al., 1994). Kainate receptors consist of heteromeric and homomeric assemblies of GluR5, GluR6, GluR7, KA1, and KA2 (Herb et al., 1992; Sakimura et al., 1992; Wenthold et al., 1994)." @default.
