- W140199728 abstract "Old age often is not a period of peace and happiness because elderly people are faced with physical and psychological changes resulting in successive losses and dependence. They more or less adapt to these new situations as long as the changes are not incapacitating. Visible structural changes, i.e., to the face, hair, skin, and body shape, are accompanied by many changes in internal organs. For example, the percentage of fat increases over age, while that of water decreases (Fryer, 1962). The loss of bone mass leads to a higher risk of fracture, and the lower rate of drug elimination by the liver exposes elderly patients to frequent adverse drug reactions. Often, elderly people have difficulty adapting to the rapid tempo of modern life because of the slowing down of their cognitive processes. Their body’s capacity to adapt to internal and external demands is diminished, and their functional reserves are depleted. This causes an overall fragility, which can lead to death in the absence of specific diseases, a condition called apocrypha. Apocrypha is observed in diet-restricted rodents who enjoy a longer life span. These animals simply die, and careful necropsy of these animals does not reveal gross pathological abnormalities (Finch, 1990). This chapter examines the modifications occurring with age at the level of the different physiological systems and describes the consequences of these changes." @default.
