- W140763027 abstract "This chapter introduces the nomenclature and literature of organic chemistry and explains the basic principles of nomenclature, and how they have been evolved, together with an account of some of the more important sources of information and an indication where more detail on the subjects may be found. Carbon compounds are usually dealt within four broad classes, as follows: open chain aliphatic or fatty compounds, alicyclic or cycloaliphatic compounds, aromatic or benzenoid compounds, and heterocyclic compounds. The aim of organic nomenclature is to give every compound a unique name, which will convey, without ambiguity, the exact structure of the compound. The name of any compound other than a hydrocarbon or heterocycle consists of at least two parts, one indicating the parent system, on which the compound is based, and the other, the attached groups, so called functional groups and nonfunctional atoms, or groups that is, the halogens, nitro, nitroso, and azoxy, as defined in the I.U.P.A.C. rules. To keep abreast of the wealth of information in the field in which a chemist is working, early notification of all the materials within the field is required—“current awareness” is the modern expression—and this usually takes the form of lists of titles or classified abstracts that lead a chemist to the required papers." @default.
