- W1408531771 abstract "The nature and severity of an injury, whether arising by accident, necrotizing agent, radiation, or by elective surgery, condition the character of both the immediate and subsequent biochemical changes that occur locally and generally. Subject's nutritive state at the time of injury, particularly in respect to labile protein reserves and glycogen, also affects the scale of these changes along with restitution of the lost blood or plasma. The environmental temperature, at the time and during the days immediately following the injury or operation, affects the condition too. Physical injury results in damage to and loss of body protein locally at the site of injury, either by physical separation of tissue from the rest of the body or by destruction of it in situ. At this time, there is initially a depression in vitality, the ebb phase, which can be transitory or more manifest and there can also be some degree of primary or neurogenic shock. The situation can also deteriorate further by loss of blood or plasma oligemia. For defense and to initiate repair of the damaged tissues, the injury is generally followed by an increase in metabolic reactions, the flow phase, involving local and general components, which together constitute the inflammatory response and beginning of repair." @default.
