- W1410517162 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the various aspects of maser and other quantum mechanical amplifiers. Solid-state masers have been constructed that operate in both the two-level and three-level mode. They have been used at frequencies from 300 Mc/sec to 40,000 Mc/sec. An amplifier with an extremely low noise level presents possibilities for the detection of signals heretofore lost in background noise. Both theoretical and experimental investigations show that relative to any other existing network, the maser noise contribution is usually negligible. Thermal noise may be circumvented by operating the amplifier at a temperature near zero degrees Kelvin. The power output of a maser oscillator system is sensitive to the output coupling to the cavity. The cavity design is an extremely important parameter for successful operation. It is not only important that the unloaded quality factor be high, but also that the cavity should be long and narrow so that the beam may have a long interaction time with the radiofrequency. The paramagnetic two-level solid state maser is also elaborated." @default.
