- W141202497 abstract "IN VIEW of the recent developing awareness of the social influences that exert pressure on children to adopt appropriate sex role inter ests and behavior, it is pertinent to review earlier literature discussing the influence of sex on children's reading preferences. In such litera ture, one may detect elements of so cial thinking that have resulted from and?in their perpetuation?contrib uted to the development of sex role stereotypes. Writers have consistently recorded sex differences in children's reading preferences (Norvell, 1950, 1958; Thorndike, 1941; Zimet, 1966), but have rarely asked why such differ ences exist. Instead, it has been left to a sexist-oriented reading audience to assume, if it will, an innate ten dency for the sexes to choose differ ent reading material. For example, in 1944, Paul Hazard wrote, Girls de mand books that demonstrate mater nal feelings ... Boys demand books of valor ... (p. 168). Partly because of such reporting, the assumption was made and the myth perpetuated that?simply because of their sex? boys and girls were interested each in a limited range of totally different reading subjects. And the assump tion was carefully nurtured, even in the face of evidence that interests of ten overlapped (Wolfson, 1960; Woody, 1948). Many investigators believed that sex differences in reading interests are not very prominent in the pri mary grades (Dunn, 1921; King, 1967; Norvell, 1958). However, by the age of nine or ten, definite sex dif ferences are becoming apparent (Bond & Tinker, 1967; Harris, 1966; Norvell, 1958; Terman & Lima," @default.
