Wireless technology has led to the development of new communications systems and multimedia services. As a result of this continued growth in the vehicular industry as well as the increasing demand of road safety, a new kind of networks was born: Vehicular Ad hoc NEtworks (VANETs). Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is an infrastructureless network where nodes are vehicles. In VANETs, each vehicle acts as a router or as a node, establishing connections among nearby vehicles or with roadside infrastructure. Nowadays VANETs are getting more attention especially from governments and car manufacturers due to the wide variety of applications and services that they provide such as road safety systems, car assistance and Internet access. Currently, it is essential to test and evaluate V2V (Vehicular to Vehicular) or V2I (Vehicular to Infrastructure) networking proposals in real conditions. However, some limitations, such as high prices, city restrictions or technological limitations make the usage of traffic simulators be the best option in order to validate vehicular applications. Moreover, obstacles in real maps where a VANET operates may attenuate or block any signal sent by any sender. However, these traffic simulators let vehicles send/receive packets between each other if they are found in the same transmission range independently if an obstacle between them is presented or not. For this reason, a check to see if an obstacle is presented between the sender and the receiver has been converted in an important task. In this thesis, we present a program named REVsim1.0 (Realistic Environment for Vanets simulation) [6.22] capable to detect in each instant of time if between sender and a receiver a communication can be established or an obstacle is found and such a communication is not possible. Parameters such as ∝, β, road resolution and transmission range have been defined and taken into account in our proposed algorithm. A validation process of our algorithm is done." @default.
