- W1412327834 abstract "Publisher Summary Photoperiodism as a means of seasonal adaptation depends on the appropriate timing of diapause and other seasonal responses. This timing is accomplished by the critical photoperiod, which is the key parameter for lifecycle regulation. The critical photoperiod might be regarded as a genetically fixed time lapse from a given signal for the photoperiodic clock to assess the natural daylength or nightlength to be below or above the inductive level. Mamestra brassicae, a noctuid moth, which is a widely distributed pest of vegetable crops in Eurasia, may take one of the three different channels of pupal development in response to photoperiod in the larval stage: long winter diapause in short photoperiods, short summer diapause in long photoperiods around 16L8D, and nondiapause in intermediate photoperiods close to 14L10D. This response is based on dark-time measurement, and shows either an hourglass or a circadian-oscillator feature depending on experimental conditions. The photoperiod in the egg and early larval stages modifies the critical photoperiod for diapause induction. Under stationary conditions, the critical photoperiod is close to 14L10D, but shifted to 13.5L10.5D and 15L9D by a preliminary exposure to 10L14D and 18L6D, respectively. This flexibility suggests that the critical photoperiod is not a fixed phase point of the photoperiodic clock, but that it might be a reflection of the physiological threshold for determining the developmental patterns in the effector component of the photoperiodic response system." @default.
