- W141238394 abstract "Leonard Mustazza. The Critical Response to Kurt Vonnegut. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1994. vi + 346 pp. $59.95 cloth. Marc Leeds. The Vonnegut Encyclopedia: An Authorized Compendium. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1995. ix + 693 pp. $75.00 cloth. In 1990 Robert Merrill, in his introduction to Critical Essays on Kurt Vonnegut, questioned the position of Vonnegut as a major figure in American literature. At first glance it may seem odd for an editor of a critical work to ask about the very he wishes to examine. Merrill's searching reappraisal of Kurt Vonnegut, however, had more to do with the historical juncture in Vonnegut studies-a juncture that was grim indeed when one looked merely at the number of articles produced since the early 1980s-rather than with the demise of Vonnegut's literary career and the impressive body of critical work that has accompanied his development. At the time Merrill wrote the introduction to Critical Essays, the output of scholarly articles devoted to Vonnegut had fallen from its quantitative peak in the 1970s, to a smattering of scholarship that was all too often forgettable. Merrill, who certainly points to the depth of Vonnegut's work and argues for his importance as a contemporary chronicler of American culture and history, prophetically concludes saying with great optimism: I suspect that Vonnegut criticism is about to undergo a marked resurgence (22). Merrill's prophecy is now reality. Of the many works devoted to Vonnegut's artistic vision that have been published since 1990, The Critical Response to Kurt Vonnegut and The Vonnegut Encyclopedia must be recognized as among the finest. The two volumes suggest the commitment Greenwood Press has made to Vonnegut studies, a commitment that has taken the work of a number of critics to a wider audience as they explore several novels Vonnegut that have heretofore been neglected. Similar to G. K. Hall's series Critical Essays on American Literature, Greenwood's Critical Responses in Arts and Letters attempts to historicize the critical response the author has received by reprinting a strong representation of the major critical reviews and articles that have collectively produced the author's . . . reputation (xvii). Perhaps Vonnegut is the perfect author to examine in a critical series of this nature, because the issue of his place in the literary canon remains unsettled and a matter of scholarly debate. The Critical Response to Kurt Vonnegut, collected and edited Leonard Mustazza whose Forever Pursuing Genesis: The Myth of Eden in the Novels of Kurt Vonnegut was published in 1990, serves as a fine companion piece to Merrill's collection, offering an overview of both the popular and the academic response to Vonnegut's novels. While because of its publication date Merrill's collection concludes with Vonnegut's eleventh novel, Galapagos (1985), in The Critical Response to Kurt Vonnegut, Mustazza is able to include criticism dealing with all thirteen of Vonnegut's novels, including the two most recent, Bluebeard (1987) and Hocus Pocus (1990). By dividing the collection into two parts-Part One: The Road to Critical Success, 1952-1969 and Part Two: The Critical Mainstream, 19701993-Mustazza makes a strong argument for Vonnegut's importance as a writer of American fiction. The volume begins with an introduction Mustazza that attempts to make sense of the unusual turns in Vonnegut's career, including his early forays into public relations prose for General Electric and his success as a writer of science fiction for the flourishing magazine industry of the 1950s. Mustazza contends that Vonnegut's unusual popular appeal, which has made him the subject of more academic and journalistic critical scrutiny than almost all of his contemporaries, is the result of his use of pop cultural ephemera to explore the most basic philosophical conundrums humanity faces. The introduction serves to place the criticism surrounding Vonnegut's rise to pop-icon status in context and points to the unusual division among academics regarding Vonnegut's worth. …" @default.
