- W1415805934 abstract "This chapter discusses the separation and characterization of vitamin B6 catabolites. The only known catabolite in mammals is 4-pyridoxic acid, which is a major excretory product. This compound probably arises through the oxidation of pyridoxal by liver aldehyde oxidase. The most detailed account of vitamin B6 catabolism has come from studies of a group of microorganisms that were isolated by enrichment culture on the three forms of vitamin B6. Two pseudomonads have been studied extensively. The catabolites of vitamin B6 may be separated and identified by ascending chromatography on Whatman No. 1 paper. The Rf values and colors with spray reagents are summarized in tabulated form in the chapter. The catabolites of pyridoxol and pyridoxamine can be isolated by ion-exchange column chromatography. The chapter presents the procedure for the purification and assay of pyridoxamine–pyruvate transaminase, pyridoxol 4-dehydrogenase, pyridoxal dehydrogenase, pyridoxo-4:5-lactonase, 2-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine-4,5-dicarboxylic acid 4-decarboxylase, 2-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine-5-carboxylate oxygenase, and α-(N-acetylaminomethylene)succinic acid hydrolase." @default.
