- W141611648 abstract "In spite of available efficacious vaccines, rabies continues to claim the lives of thousands of humans each year, and nearly half of those are children. Preventive childhood vaccination in highly endemic areas would be expected to dramatically reduce this death toll. Nevertheless, large-scale childhood vaccination based on currently licensed vaccines would be too expensive. Novel vaccines that induce protective immunity after a single dose may be more cost-effective. This chapter describes the development of rabies vaccines based on recombinant adenoviral vectors. These vectors are highly immunogenic and induce sustained B cell responses after a single moderate dose. They are easy to expand and purify, and assays for scale-up production and release testing are in place. Adenoviral vectors therefore provide an alternative vaccine platform for prophylactic rabies vaccination." @default.
