- W141650218 abstract "Abstract A chronic, low-grade proinflammatory state is one of the main causes of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and substantial evidence now shows that inflammatory changes affect cancer risk. Indeed, a proinflammatory state may be a common risk factor for all three major chronic diseases that humans face today. A Mediterranean diet can reduce proinflammatory processes, however, and, as a result, it can circumvent the toxicity associated with pharmacological approaches and offer benefits in many health domains. The data indicates that a Western diet (high in n-6 fats, low in plant foods, low in fiber) is proinflammatory, and a Mediterranean diet is anti-inflammatory. In fact, for reducing inflammation, the Mediterranean diet appears to be ideal. Numerous aspects of the Greek-Mediterranean diet (monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFA, n-3 fatty acids, phytochemicals, fiber) can work in concert to reduce inflammation. Interestingly, Mediterranean dietary patterns can also contribute to reduced weight gain, which may further prevent proinflammatory changes." @default.
