- W141654018 abstract "The efficacy of garlic (Allium sativum) in lowering cholesterol in humans has long been the subject of clinical trials. An earlier meta-analysis of all randomised clinical trials (RCTs) concluded that there was a significant reduction in total cholesterol levels of 0.59 mmol/L (22.78 mg/dL) relating to a decrease of approximately 9% compared with placebo [1]. This figure was based on four studies including 324 participants. A subsequent meta-analysis [2] assessing 16 trials including 952 participants reached a similar conclusion: a reduction of 0.77 mmol/L (29.73 mg/dL) was noted corresponding to a 12% decrease. These authors later re-analysed the data including the results of their own negative trial with 115 participants. The overall reduction had then diminished to 0.65 mmol/L (25.10 mg/dL), but remained significantly greater than placebo [3]. Following the publication of several further trials, more recent meta-analyses [4, 5] have shown only modest treatment effects that cast doubt on the value of garlic supplements as an intervention for hypercholesterolemia. The body of evidence on this subject continues to grow with further clinical trials published. Hence an updated review is required in the attempt to determine the specific effect of garlic supplements on total cholesterol in individuals with hypercholesterolemia." @default.
