- W14180717 abstract "A new method for the determination of the surface free energy of solids has been developed. The method is based on Williamsons, suggestion for the determination of the residual force after correcting for bulk forces in creep experiments. This correction for bulk forces is made by running two samples of different surface to volume ratios against one another differentially. A series of measurements has been made on aluminum, on nylon, and on gold. Each of these series has resulted in at least one surface energy value of the correct order of magnitude. The values are not yets for various reasons, considered reliable. In further work, it is planned to increase the precision of individual measurements. When this has been accomplished, the results should be reliable within 0.1 gram/ cm. A furnace has been constructed that will hold the temperature constant within O.0l deg C up to 800 deg C (by present method of measurement). With present equipment, elongation measurements can be made within 2 x l0/sup -9/ cm, and differential elongation measurements to 6 x 10/sup -5/ cm can be made between two samples. The furnace will accommodate two l0-cm-long samples. One per cent elongation would be 10/sup -1/: cmmore » which can be measured with a precision of 2%. A smaller elongation might be desirable for internal equilibrium and for shorter running time, but with the present equipment it is necessary to use an elongation of the order of 1%. Although reasonable values have been obtained for the surface tensions of aluminums nylons and golds many unreasonable results have also been obtained . These reflect variations in the surface condition and composition of the samples tested. This has led to the definition of a new terms the ''apparent surface tensions'' which includes all effects not calculable from sample geometry. Thus it has been found that reproducible sample preparation is one of the prime difficulties of a dynamic method. Samples vary in viscosity as a result of differences in previous history, rate of elongations and time after loading. When sample histories are made equivalent, then the other variations become reproducible even though they cannot be eliminated. (auth)« less" @default.
