- W141968340 abstract "Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) ranks fourth in production behind wheat, maize, and rice as a world food crop. It is noted for its high nutritive value, and it is a crop leader in terms of protein production and energy production per unit area. This chapter presents a list of classification and origin of the cultivated potatoes. It also discusses the cytology, genome manipulation, and genetics of potato. Some important criteria to consider in the selection of potato cultivars are grouped into three complexes: (1) yield and adaptation to natural and cultural conditions, (2) resistance to pests and diseases, and (3) quality. These are the main breeding objectives of potato. Hybridization is the basic technique of potato breeding, the purpose of which is to combine traits from two complementary parents or to increase the frequency of favorable genes. The chapter reviews the strategies, methods, and techniques used for potato breeding. Significant progress has been made toward applying biotechnology to potato breeding and genetics. Advancement is to be expected as the potato is amenable to tissue, cell, and protoplast culture, the ploidy level can be easily manipulated, and the plants can be vegetatively propagated. Biotechnological options are being explored because biological factors such as tetrasomic inheritance and low male fertility leave little chance for superior cultivars to be bred using traditional crossing techniques. The chapter discusses various applications of biotechnology in potato breeding have been applied. The potato embodies a unique combination of features. It is tetraploid and heterozygous, can be asexually propagated, and is amenable to tissue and cell culture methods. It possesses an extremely large gene pool and can be transformed by Agrobacterium tumefaciens or other methods. The chapter discusses the value of these characteristics." @default.
