- W1419987209 abstract "In the late stages of carcinogenesis, interactions between cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix are often altered. These changes are associated with a tumor cell's ability to dissociate from the primary mass, break through the basement membrane, invade the underlying stroma, and metastasize to distant sites. The interactions affected include adherence to, degradation of, and migration along basement membranes and stromal matrices. Given the fact that similar alterations also occur during normal tissue development, albeit in a tightly regulated manner, it is not unreasonable to suggest that co-optation of cell- extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions may occur throughout the carcinogenic process rather than being restricted only to the later metastatic stages. If such changes are to occur early in the disease process, the resulting phenotypic effects would likely be tissue-specific in nature. It has been found that this is the case in the human mammary gland. In the presence of a basement membrane matrix, normal and carcinoma derived breast epithelial cells exhibit mammary-specific differences in cellular behavior that are not seen in monolayer culture." @default.
