- W142008258 abstract "Rapid technological changes call for a planned approach to automation. In large industries there is need to adopt advanced technology which calls for immediate attention to the reorientation of manpower at various levels through training. The campaign for automation in small and medium industries should be ”Appropriate” and should yield increased productivity through better use of men, materials and money; increased quality of manufactured products; and increased safety of operation. The approach should be to have the existing production equipment as the basis to superimpose standard, simple, relatively inexpensive control components; to evaluate economic feasibility at every step and to ‘do-it-yourself with the participation of worker. This paper describes an approach to ‘Appropriate Automation’ that will be relevant to a developing country like India. The Department of Electronics has launched an Appropriate Automation Promotion Programme to cater to the needs of the country in the context of applying appropriate automation. Several case studies involving new design concepts that have been implemented in the laboratory are described. Such concepts are disseminated through chain of laboratories in the different parts of the country. It is also planned to make many of these concepts available to other developing countries." @default.
