- W1420340080 abstract "This chapter examines the effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine on maintenance of pregnancy, congenital abnormalities, and the development of toxemia. The blood levels of 5-HT do not change during pregnancy. There is an increased concentration of 5-HT in some part of the placenta, which might produce deleterious effects leading to altered placental function in turn causing various toxic effects, that is, toxemia of pregnancy, fetal death, and fetal abnormalities., This might be done by an effect on (1) the placental vessels themselves, (2) the vessels in the umbilical cord, or (3) the blood vessels in the uterus adjacent to the placenta. It is also possible that 5-HT affects the permeability to nutrients of the tissues between the maternal and fetal parts of the placenta thus reducing the functional activity of the placenta and leading to damage in the fetal placenta. 5-HT is a powerful contractor of uterine muscles of various species, when this is measured in vitro. The most likely mechanism by which 5-HT accumulating in the placenta affects placental function is by a constriction of uterine blood vessels immediately adjacent to and supplying the placenta. A rise in the 5-HT content of the placenta is demonstrated during toxemia and this is confirmed by subsequent investigators." @default.
