- W1421102601 abstract "This chapter reviews the evidence for a subtype of OCD related to tic disorders. There is mounting evidence that OCD is a heterogeneous disorder comprised of distinct subtypes or symptom dimensions. Elevated rates of OCD in patients with tic disorders and vice versa suggest that patients who experience both OCD and tics may constitute a distinct subtype. Compared to patients with OCD alone, patients with OCD and tics have an earlier age of onset and tend to respond better when serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI) pharmacotherapy is augmented with antipsychotic medication. OCD patients with tics, compared to OCD alone, also seem to have higher rates of compulsions associated with feelings of incompleteness. It is possible that patients with OCD and tics require a multimodal treatment approach combining various behavioral treatment techniques, including exposure and response prevention, habit reversal and cognitive techniques for treating obsessions, compulsions, and tics. It is possible that tic-related OCD might be better conceptualized as consisting of separate symptom dimensions that result in a subtype of OCD associated with tics." @default.
