- W142601265 abstract "Recently I had occasion to read through five years of the Joyce/Weaver correspondence in the British Library. That fascinating experience revealed not only what sorts of letters and passages were not included in the three volumes of Joyce letters but also some details concerning the correcting of the 1922 edition of Ulysses. The latter, a bonus to me, are a mixed bag. Still, they may prove of interest to those currently rethinking the Gabler edition. It is no surprise that Joyce took the correcting process very seriously. On 11/ HI/1922 he writes of his distress over the blunders disfiguring Ithaca. Seven months later, in October, he describes the process of correcting that chapter and beyond. On the 17th of October he mentions working through thirty pages a day and describes a meeting with Darantiere during which the errata were discussed. At the meeting the printer asked him whether the list was complete and was told it was not. That same letter gives us some insight into the true nature of Joyce's concerns about the format of the edition, concerns that become more interesting in the light of the important changes introduced by the Gabler edition. It seems that far from worrying about the placement of dialogue dashes or the punctuation of the Circe stage directions, Joyce was worried about the quality of the impression of certain pages of the second edition, about the annoying broken f 's, and about what experts said was the worst feature: the typeface used for the capitals in Eolus. At that point it was decided that, since there are no Elzevir capitals, it would be best to go to block capitals like those used in newspapers. The result was the handsome bold caps found in later Darantiere editions. All of this was serious business, but a letter dictated to Lucia and signed by Joyce on 3/XI/19221 raises other, more important questions. The document in question deals with the question of criticism of Ulysses and praises Val?ry Larbaud for being a man who knows his mind and can express his opinions. Only the postscript interests us herein his critical and synoptic edition, Hans Gabler has opted for the reading Acatalectic tetrameter of iambs(3.23), justifying his" @default.
