- W142810016 abstract "There's nothing like leading by example. When Bakersfield College president Rick Wright decided to lead his school into the world of multimedia instruction, he decided he would be the guinea pig. Together with professor Jim Whitehouse, Dr. Wright taught the first multimedia class on campus in 1991, an ongoing course on general psychology that has spearheaded growing use of multimedia campuswide. Bakersfield College is a community college of 14, 000 students located 110 miles from Los Angeles. The college incorporates both students fresh from high school as well as many adult students; the average student age is 31. Dr. Wright's academic specialty is psychology, with a special focus on learning therory. In an interview with IBM, he shares his pioneering experience with multimedia. Because of my interest in learning theory, I have always thought that the way we traditionally teach is a paradox. It's in opposition, in most cases, to what we know about how people learn -- such as the fact that we process and remember visual images much more efficiently than things we hear. A few years ago, I went to an IBM executive conference where I first saw a demonstration of multimedia. When I saw this technology, which showed how you could integrate media and illustrate concepts visually, I had one of those blinding flashes of the obvious -- Why in the world aren't we doing this in education? We understand learning theory, but yet we don't practice what we know, and we don't utilize the technology that's out there. I made up my mind that multimedia technology could foster a teaching and learning revolution at all levels of education. My own little revolution I decided that I would start my own little revolution in my little corner of the world. Every revolution starts with one shot, so I decided to pull the trigger here in Bakersfield Being the college president obviously puts me in a unique position to do that. A lot of great ideas die on presidents' desks; the trick is to get faculty to go along. We let faculty know that there was new technology available involving computers and media and a way to integrate outside resources right in their lectures. If professors were interested, they could write a proposal and receive an IBM multimedia computer setup. But sometimes it's important to lead by example. To demonstrate the capabilities of multimedia to the faculty, I decided to get personally involved and wade through this technology myself before I asked others to do it. I think the faculty was pleased that I would not only promote multimedia, but also do it -- put my money where my mouth was, as it were. Getting started Wright asked fellow psychology professor Jim Whitehouse if he would team-teach a course in general psychology using multimedia, and he agreed. The two began teaching their first class in the fall of 1991, and right from the start they invited other faculty to sit in. Over the first 18 months, about two-thirds of Bakersfield's faculty have attended class sessions, along with visiting faculty from all over the country. Meanwhile, a number of Bakersfield's faculty have begun using multimedia in their own teaching [see sidebars]. The initial computer setup for class instruction was an IBM PS/2r with an IBM M-MotionTM Video Adapter/A, along with a videodisc player and a PCVCR. Later, the professors added the IBM ActionMedia H adapter, which uses DVIr technology to supportfullmotion digital video. To author their presentations, the pair use Asymetrixr ToolBook running under WindowsTM. To project their presentations, they initially used an LCD panel and an overhead projector; now they use a Sony integrated video projector. Multimedia integrates everything Our entire course is now delivered with IBM multimedia. We use the IBM PS/2 Rewritable Optical Drive to store the content, which has turned out to be the best aspect of the whole setup. …" @default.
