- W14283294 abstract "Science and technology encompass all human activities involved with understanding and manipulating biological and physical aspects of our world. Most contemporary thinkers would broaden definition of science beyond simply understanding nature to in clude many kinds of intellectual effort and experimentation in pursuit of new knowledge. Vannevar Bush has called science the endless frontier.1 Technology, on other hand, evolves second arily from scientific discovery and may be defined as totality of means employed to provide for human sustenance and comfort. Rather than creating knowledge or understanding, technology pro vides tools, means for accomplishing tasks. Technology may be simple, as in a wood stove; or complex, as in a nuclear power plant. Society's view of science is in a state of flux. In a keynote article, Reformation of Science, Rustum Roy discusses concept that world's previously respectful, if not almost worshipful, attitude towards science as creator of good things has been irreversibly changed.2 The current ambivalence has resulted from public awareness that scientific or technological efforts have pro duced not only benefits but also social problems, ranging from harmful food additives to nuclear weaponry. Although science was once thought to be free of human bias, it is now becoming clear that in science, as in all other areas of life, human perception dictates nature of our understanding. We cannot transcend what R W. Bridgman calls the inescapable human reference point.3 In this sense humanities and sciences are inseparably intertwined, from both an operational as well as a theoretical and interpretative basis. The advancement of science is no longer accomplished by scien tists alone. Science and technology are now multifaceted endeavors frequently directed by governments and industrial firms. The indi vidual scientist often executes his work along narrow lines of inves tigation that are predetermined by nonscientific governmental or" @default.
