- W1430138510 abstract "Publisher Summary The ecology, of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, protists, lower algae and fungi, in a given biotope remains a mystery. The reason for this is the experimental inaccessibility of natural micro-communities and their interaction with their immediate environment. Recent investigations of the composition of natural populations by techniques based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have made it obvious that many more different microbial inhabitants exist in all investigated habitats than previously thought. In this situation, where direct information is not available, it is necessary to look for indirect but clear evidence for a particular ecological behavior and for the meaning of phenotypic traits in the molecular imprint of ecologically relevant factors in individual organisms. Particularly in ecosystems with drastically and rapidly changing environmental conditions, such as soils, plant surfaces and animals, it is to be expected that a large proportion of microbial genetic material must be reserved for rapid metabolic responses. These responses would act to protect against adverse physical factors, including temperature and other stresses, chemicals such as toxins, and predators. They can also be used to facilitate genetic adaptation to intermediate term changes by responding with altered phenotypes that depend on alterations in genotype. This in turn requires a highly responsive gene pool and frequent exchanges with the global and immediately accessible interacting population." @default.
