This applies to the terrestrial as well as to the airborne case. In the terrestrial application, registration, that is alignment to a common reference frame, must be distinguished from geo-referencing. A reference to a geodetic coordinate system is not always needed in terrestrial applications, as sometimes a local coordinate system is sufficient. Special attention is paid to registration approaches that require neither markers nor additional orientation sensors. In the airborne case, a simultaneous orientation and determination of calibration parameters on the job is becoming standard.
