- W143255788 abstract "Context Among Australian adults, participation in adequate levels of physical activity for health benefit declines with age, with the lowest levels seen in mid- and older-aged adults. General Practitioners (GPs) have been identified by older adults as one of their prefered sources of physical activity advice. Short consultation durations are however a major barrier to the promotion of physical activity in general practice.Feasibility StudyA pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of recruitment, assessment and intervention protocols for a larger, randomised trial. This randomised Feasibility Study involved eight GPs who worked in a community health centre. Insufficiently active* patients (N = 28) aged 55 to 70 years were randomly allocated to one of three intervention groups. Physical activity was measured at weeks 1, 12 and 24, and physical assessment tasks were conducted at weeks 1 and 12. Participants in Group 1 received 'usual care' from their GP (written Active Prescription, information booklet and brief verbal advice). Participants in Group 2 received counselling from an Exercise Scientist (ES; individualised physical activity program, goal setting, physical activity diary and three follow-up telephone calls over 12 weeks) and those in Group 3 received ES counselling and telephone support tailored around the use of a pedometer. The mean age of participants was 64 years (range = 55 to 70) and about one-third of the participants were men. At week 12, participants in Groups 2 and 3 achieved greater increases in physical activity than participants in Group 1. However, these increases in physical activity were not well maintained at the week 24 follow-up. Findings and experiences from the Feasibility Study were used to make modifications to the design, inclusion criteria, pre-intervention physical activity measures and physical assessment protocols for the larger Intervention Study.Intervention StudyThe aim of the Intervention Study was to test the efficacy of three general practice based strategies which aimed to increase physical activity among mid- to older-aged adults.Ten GPs and 136 insufficiently active patients aged 50 to 70 years from two private general practices were involved in the randomised trial. The primary outcome variable, self-reported physical activity, was measured prior to receipt of the intervention, at week 12 and again at week 24. Additional variables included cardiovascular risk factors and balance (measured at weeks 1 and 12), and correlates of physical activity (measured at weeks 1, 12 and 24).The study design was hierarchical, with all participants receiving GP 'usual care7 advice (written Active Prescription, information booklet and brief verbal advice). Participants randomised to Group 1 received this advice alone. In addition to the GP advice, one third of participants received counselling from an ES (Group 2, individualised physical activity program, goal setting, physical activity diary and three follow-up telephone calls over 12 weeks), and another third received ES counselling as per Group 2, but with a focus on using a pedometer to increase physical activity levels (Group 3).The average age of participants was 58 years (range = 50 to 70) and 40% of participants were men." @default.
