- W1432866087 abstract "In 1628, the first Dutch Reformed church opened in lower Manhattan. The denomination quickly grew further north along the Hudson River as West Indies trade expanded. Now called the Reformed Church in Amer- ica, the denomination has grown to approximately 250,000 members nationwide. It exists most vigorously today in the places that were thickly settled by the Dutch: the Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, western Michigan, and central Iowa among them. There are six Reformed congregations in the Town of Saugerties, New York-population 19,482.The Reformed Church is confessional church, adhering to specific creeds and statements of doctrine and faith, including the Heidelberg Catechism of 1576. The church has polity where authority is divided among representative bodies: consistories (a congregational council), classes (equivalent to dioceses), regional synods (provinces), and the General Synod. The General Synod meets annually and establishes policies, programs, and agenda for the entire R.C.A.In 1677, New York's governor signed an agreement with Kaelcop, chief of the Amorgarickakan family of the Esopus native tribe, to purchase a place called Sagiers for blanket, piece of cloth, shirt, loaf of bread, and some coarse fiber to make socks. The name Saugerties means little sawyer in Dutch, an apt name for place bounded on the north by stream called Sawyer's Kill. A subset of the town, the village of Saugerties today has population of about 5,000. It is one of twenty-six municipalities in Ulster County, whose population of 182,000 includes New Paltz, Woodstock, and Kingston, the county seat. The village boasts nearly ninety buildings of architectural or historical in- terest, including section of Main and Partition Streets now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Saugerties lighthouse, structure from 1869 on an island in the Hudson River.Saugerties Reformed Church occupies prominent location on Main Street. The congregation began at what is now the Katsbaan Reformed Church, which was established in 1710 but only has records to 1730. (Katsbaan is an unincorporated village within the northern boundary of the Town of Saugerties today.) When the congregation outgrew that building, it moved to another building, outgrew that, and then finally commissioned the current building on Main Street in 1851. Twentytwo clergy have served the congregation, with an average tenure of over thirteen years. The design for the edifice was the work of James Renwick, Jr., the noted New York architect The congregation's history classifies the style of the design as somewhat difficult to label, as it is Gothic in spirit but without pointed arches. The church's governing body directed that the sum for construc- tion not exceed the available means and that no debt be incurred for construction-perhaps reflecting the miserly reputation of the Dutch. In 1848, the congregation built an adjacent parsonage, chapel was erected in 1876, and rooms for children's activities connect the church and chapel today. On Maundy Thursday, the congregation has planned an eclectic rite that is advertised on the sign outside the church as Tenebrae, Drama, Passion, Music, Broadway Cast, Free. The reverse side of the sign advertises the congregation's upcoming chicken-and-ribs dinner.About two hundred people are gathered inside the church, where candles have been set up on the dais and down the side aisles. Typical of reformed churches, the front of the space is dominated by the organ, where the organist sits with her back to the congregation with room on either side to accommodate choir. Below this, the holy table is covered with white cloth that obscures some bulky objects.Opus 530 of the Roosevelt Organ Works, the organ dates to 1892, and has been rebuilt and enhanced subsequently. After meditation music and an unidentified prelude, the minister appears at the lectern, dressed in black gown and red stole. …" @default.
