BV accumulates digital photographs associated with geographic and date information. These were assessed to determine the relative contribution of the BV data in terms of faunistic �novelty�, their geographic coverage, and their possible geographic, seasonal or aesthetic biases. The information was found to be useful in terms of the documentation of new species x site combinations. The species representations in the BV database were broadly proportional to their known geographic occupations and to the length of the adult flight period. Thus, despite a slight bias against species that are the least visually attractive (to humans), the data were of interest for the taxon analyzed at least. It is suggested that this Internet facility (or similar web-based resources) may add potentially useful elements to a network of interest which might ultimately help to compensate for the present deficit of basic entomological data through large parts of the study area" @default.
