- W1434037163 abstract "This chapter presents a study on optic nerve lesions, cranial nerves and brain stem. Damage to optic nerve classically causes an abnormality in visual sensory function, which is a relative afferent pupillary defect, and a change in the appearance of the optic nerve occurs. The chapter discusses anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, toxic/nutritional optic neuropathy, hereditary optic neuropathies, traumatic optic neuropathy, and others. Acquired optic neuropathies can produce any kind of visual field defect, including a central scotoma, cecocentral scotoma, arcuate visual field defect, altitudinal defect, or even a temporal or nasal hemianopic defect. Unless the optic neuropathy is bilateral or the lesion is located near the chiasm, the field defect produced by an optic nerve lesion is always monocular. The visual field defects that occur with various optic neuropathies are not themselves localizing. The optic disc has only two ways to respond to the many acquired pathologic processes that may affect the optic nerve. Optic neuropathies are best approached by considering the category of disease and the clinical entities therein. Optic neuritis is an inflammatory disorder of the optic nerve that typically occurs in young adults. It is characterized by a sub acute, painful loss of central vision that may progress for 7 to 10 days. Visual acuity varies from a mild reduction to severe loss. Pain is usually exacerbated by eye movement and may precede or coincide with visual loss. The condition of patients with any cause of increased intracranial pressure resulting in optic disc swelling is called papilledema." @default.
