- W1434050732 abstract "The research was conducted using heat-modified polystyrene (PS) obtained by melting polystyrene waste materials at 513K and cooling at varying temperature conditions to solidify. The effect of cooling temperature on the physical properties, as well as the extent of bio-dissolution of soluble organic compounds from the remoulded polystyrene in human saliva and sweat was analysed. The remoulding was done using a locally fabricated polymer melting and moulding apparatus, and the cooling temperatures considered for the study were; 285K, 303 K, 313K, 353K, 373K and 423K. Test on the physical properties of the remoulded polystyrene showed variations compared to the PS wastes as well as variations in the remoulded samples subjected to different cooling conditions. There was occurrence of soluble organic compounds dissolution which was determined in terms of total organic carbon with all the experiments controlled at 310K (normal body temperature). Three different kinetic models (pseudo first and second-order-rate equations and Elovich’s equation) were used to discuss the bio-dissolution and the bio-kinetic process. The pseudo-second-order rate equation with the highest R2 value, meaningful initial dissolution rate (ho), rate constant (k), significant equilibrium concentration (qe) for both saliva and sweat was adopted to explain the event. The extent of bio-dissolution increase gradually as cooling temperature increased, the concentration of dissolved organic compounds also increase cumulatively as time progresses from the initial 15min to 14400min but periodically, the dissolution concentration decrease with the highest concentration at the 15mins followed by 1440min. It was therefore realised from observation that, the bio-dissolution was at all-times higher in saliva than in sweat, making saliva more bioactive in this case." @default.
