- W1434092911 abstract "This chapter explores the biochemistry of mitochondria and disruption of energy metabolism. Mitochondria is the most abundant cellular organelle. There can be as many as 10,000 mitochondria in a single cell and they can account for 10 to 20% of all cellular protein. They are small cellular organelles that are composed of an outer and inner membrane. The inner membrane is extensively folded, giving it a very large surface area. The primary function of mitochondria is the production of ATP, which is used in various cellular processes. As in all cells, oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria is primarily responsible for the generation of the ATP that is required as the energy source for most cellular functions. Therefore, neurons are very sensitive to the toxic actions of agents, which disrupt mitochondrial production of ATP. The classic inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation, such as cyanide, sodium azide, and dinitrophenol, are all very toxic to neural tissue. These compounds kill animals by inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation in the central nervous system resulting in the disruption of nerve function and the cessation of breathing. This chapter discusses in detail the biochemistry of mitochondia and ATP production in the brain. The chapter also elaborates the inhibitors of mitochondrial functions." @default.
