- W1434809468 abstract "This chapter discusses inhibitors in electron flow as tools for the functional and structural localization of carriers and energy conservation sites. The inhibition of photosynthetic electron flow in isolated chloroplasts (or bacterial chromatophores) is one of the main tools for the elucidation of the sequence and of the detailed mechanisms of the electron carrier function. Inhibitors were instrumental in the final identification of a second coupling site connected with photosystem II, for a concept of artificial energy conservation and for present information on the topology of the membrane. Inhibitors are indispensible for studies of photosynthesis in vivo in intact organisms and for an evaluation of the physiological significance of biochemical observations obtained in in vitro systems. Many inhibitors are also of commercial importance as herbicides. Photosynthetic electron flow from water to NADP, vectorial across the thylakoid membrane, is coupled in two energy conservation sites to ATP formation. The currently available inhibitors of electron flow may be grouped according to five areas of attack on the photosynthetic electron transport system. This chapter discusses the inhibitors of the acceptor site of photosystem I and the inhibitors in recent developments on the mechanism of photosynthesis." @default.
