- W143713222 abstract "A series of experiments we conducted to study the path taken by radiohalogen produced by (n, alpha ) and (n, gamma ) reactions in acetates and halogenacetates. CH3CCOK and CH3COORb were irradiated with fast neutrons for the reactions K(n,4aa)CI and Rb(n, alpha )Br; CH2ClCOONa and CH2BrCOONa were irradiated with paraffin-mcderated neutrons for the (n, gamma ) reactions of CI and Br; and CH2BrCCOH was irradiated with slow neutrons for the reaction Br(n, gamma )Br. Halide carrier and AgNO3 were added after irradiation, and counts of the radiohalogen present as halide were made on the precipitates. In the case of CH2BrCOONa and CH2BrCOOH, radiobromine in the form of CH2Br2 was also studied. It was found that, with the exception of CH2BrCOOH, the major pant of the radiohalogen was in the form of halide, in agreement with Libby's billiard ball theory, which predicts that the radiohalogen atom will be stopped by the heavy cation rather than be stopped next to a CH2 group. In the case of CH2BrCOOH, 50 to 55% of the radiobromine was found as bromoacetate and approximately 20% as CH2Br2, probably because there is no heavy cation to compete with the bromine in stopping the radiobromine atom." @default.
