- W143813802 abstract "There has been an explosion of interest in children's award-winning literature in last decade. With escalating in terest in literature-based learning, presti gious awards such as Newbery and Caldecott are becoming even more prized. Topics and genres for these award books are multifaceted, and there are books to meet most students' interests. Yet teachers still wonder how to help stu dents select good books that match their interests while at same time provide a comfortable readability level. Newbery Medal books quite easily engage students' interests. However, finding Newbery books that match an individual student's ability level can be a challenge. In order to provide infor mation about readability levels, we ex amine each Newbery award-winning title from 1922 to 1997. The readability level of a book is an important consideration for evaluating age-level reading appropriateness. The term readability refers to the level of difficulty of content, vocabulary, and structure (Shafritz, Koeppe, & Soper, 1988, p. 385). The focus for our study of Newbery Medal books is on level of difficulty. The Fry readability formula, selected for this study, is based on average of (a) number of sentences in three 100-word passages and (b) number of syllables in three 100-word passages (Fry, 1977). The average of three passages for both number of sentences and number of syllables is then charted on Fry graph to determine grade level readability. We randomly selected passages to evaluate at beginning, middle, and end of each of books. Readability outcomes can vary great ly because of passages selected. For instance, if a passage with conversation is selected, readability level often is lower than for a descriptive passage. Or, in case of 1989 award winner, Joyful Noise, levels ranged from Grades 1 to 11 because there were entire poems without any punctuation to indicate sen tence length. For this reason, we also re port range of levels found for three passages." @default.
