As work is performed in an organizational and psycho-social environment as well as in a physical one, it involves psychological and social adjustment as well as physiological adaptation. Most jobs are carried out within an organization that places certain constraints on individual freedom. It determines where a person must work, when and for how long, the scope of the job, and its manner of execution. At regional and local levels within a country, behavioral differences in the patterns of absence derived from a variety of factors reflect in part social codes and values. The nature of the local community has been suggested as one factor determining the level of adjustment at work. The chapter discusses certain sources of tension and conflict in the working environment and how occupational physicians and hygienists can make an important contribution to the reduction of such tension and conflict.
