- W14444429 abstract "Automated product configuration is an emerging technology which aims to reduce the time taken to produce a quotation for a customised product. In many industries, especially those where the market demands high levels of customisation, the process of responding to a request for a quotation can be a time consuming and costly exercise. The quotation itself adds no value to the finished product. Nor is there any guarantee that the quotation will be transformed into an order. It is, however, a necessary process; without which, a customer is highly unlikely to place an order. The ability to produce a quotation quickly not only reduces the cost of the process, but also aids in the presenting of a professional company image, increasing the probability of receiving the order. Many products which are manufactured or assembled to order require a considerable amount of configuration by sales staff with a high degree of product knowledge, often in conjunction with other specialist departments, such as engineering, to ensure that the product satisfies both the customer's needs and any standards relevant to the particular product.By encapsulating the product experts' knowledge within a computer system, the product configuration can be performed quickly, accurately and repeatably. Significantly, once captured during the quoting process, the information about a specific customer request can also be used to generate reports for manufacturing, extending beyond the original aim of producing a quotation. In recent years, a number of product configurators have been released onto the market, all aiming to, among other things, streamline the quoting process. As the developers of these applications are creating a general product to configure many different specific products, the software invariably requires a high degree of customisation, often by application specialists before they are ready for use by a company. They also tend to carry many bells and whistles, surplus to the core functional requirements, for marketing purposes. Although there are many documented cases of the benefits that these systems offer, it is only large companies that can afford them. The final price of the system implementation is well beyond the means of small to medium sized enterprises.Despite the high cost of these product configurators, the essential configuration logic is relatively simple. Importantly, this logic, defining the configuration of specific products, is generally not known by the application specialists implementing the system and must first be gleaned from the product experts. As the underlying logic is relatively simple and even the commercial product configurators require substantial customisation, this thesis sought to establish the feasibility of developing a configurator using much cheaper and more widely available base products. This was achieved by creating a custom product configurator using tools such as Microsoft Access, Excel, and Visual Basic in a case study undertaken at Allyacht Spars Australia, a local mast manufacturer. Allyacht Spars is typical of the small businesses that could benefit enormously from a product configurator, but cannot afford the price tag of the commercial packages. The configurator that was developed for this thesis was extremely successful, reducing the average time to produce a quotation for a custom mast by over 80%. The scope of the configurator developed includes both a structural engineering analysis and the selection of compatible optional extras.Significantly, once the initial model for the configurator's architecture was established, the range of the configurator's functionality could be rapidly expanded. Using the same basic model, a second configurator was developed for flagpoles, another of Allyachts' products. This second configurator was developed and implemented in less than a day. Therefore, the architecture developed in this thesis was found to be highly successful in facilitating the rapid development of product configurators using relatively simple and readily available tools, thereby bringing automated product configuration within reach of smaller manufacturers." @default.
