- W1444533778 abstract "The poplar weevil (Cryptorrhynchus lapathi L.) is a serious pest of poplars in northeastern China. It attacks stems of young poplars and willows and the moat destructive effect is caused by the boring larvae. Populus canadensis Moench. and P. berolinen-sis Dippel are most susceptible to its attack, whereas P. pseudo-simonii Kitag and P. canadensis Moench are little affected. Therefore the latter can be planted in the region where the pests are abundant. In Liaoning Province, the weevil has one generation a year. Both eggs and first instar larvae in the egg shells pass over the winter. The eggs start hatching in the middle of April. The larvae usually attack the cambium layer and often girdle the twigs. In the middle of May they bore to in the heart wood of the pupal cells and undergoing pupation. The adults begin emerging in the middle of June. The females start egg-laying in the first decade of August.According to our field experiments the treatement with spores of 1-2 billion per ml of Beauveria bassiana (Bals) Vuill. on the openings of larval tunnels in the spring when the young larvae have begun actively feeding is very effective to kill the larvae." @default.
