- W1444620067 abstract "Although anemia associated with vitamin Bs deprivation was characterized in animals very soon after recognition of the vitamin, there was a delay of several years before spontaneously occurring anemia responsive to pyridoxine was documented in human beings. The first such case, together with continued observations of this patient over 9 years, has been presented as the prototype of pyridoxine responsive anemia in man. Identification of this case as the “prototype” seems warranted, not only because it was the first to be documented, but also because of similarities of findings to those observed in deprivation studies in animals. These similarities include hypochromic, microcytic anemia, erythroblastic bone marrow hyperplasia, abnormal metabolism of tryptophan, and failure to utilize iron for hemoglobin synthesis. This chapter summarizes findings presented by 72 known cases of pyridoxine-responsive anemia in human beings. This discussion is based upon a detailed analysis of human pyridoxine responsive anemia." @default.
