- W14457487 abstract "Crystals have always had a fascination for people. Are not diamonds a girl’s best friend? Their perfect shapes, their colours and the way they can be grown from a clear solution have long had a fascination. They have been (and are) involved in magic and sorcery and ‘new age’ religion. But they also have considerable scientific importance. The crystalline state is the one with the highest order, and therefore minimum entropy. Electrical properties of crystals have been of interest since the discovery of electricity. Crystal sets were the earliest form of radio transmitters and receivers. After many years in which thermionic valves dominated the radio industry, it was realised that crystals gave much more accurate frequency control than the capacitor-inductance coil combination. Now, of course, there has been a switch to transistors, but these sold-state devices are all crystals, as are all the ‘chips’ in computers." @default.
