- W144706075 abstract "The pursuit of new sequences has been rewarded and led to the discovery of alternate pathways of glucose metabolism. The concept of pathway is meaningful and convenient. However, the other pathways are not metabolic aberrations. They are unconventional only as accidents of history and of choice of experimental material. This chapter discusses the metabolic reactions of the simple carbohydrates. Among other pathways, there are well-recognized routes: the pentose phosphate pathway and the Entner–Doudoroif pathway. The first has a general distribution among the various species. The second has a limited occurrence. Assigned to pathways or not, there are a great many metabolic reactions of carbohydrates outside of the named pathways. The pertinent enzymes may be regarded as ancillary to one or another pathway, for their products can flow into the streams of the existent pathways. The chapter discusses the enzymes of these pathways. Many carbohydrate products are involved in the metabolism of cell walls, such as complex polysaccharides, ascorbic acid, and glycoproteins." @default.
