- W1447482723 abstract "Ergastoplasm is the term used to designate a specialized zone of cytoplasm that stains with basic dyes. The chapter discusses its history, ultrastructure, and biochemistry. Ergastoplasm provides an excellent example of the necessity for the conjoined exploitation of varied disciplines in modern research; by its very nature it is set at the crossroads between morphology and physiology, cytology, and biochemistry. Thus, a morphological problem of classical microscopy is being transformed into a biochemical (microsomes) and a histochemical (detection of RNA) problem. The histochemical and most of the biochemical aspects are reviewed. The electron microscope has revealed that the cytoplasm of such regions presents an absolutely typical ultrastructure. The filaments or rods are not separate inclusions but are part of the cytoplasm and are in direct continuity with it. They correspond to more fibrillar areas of the normal protoplasmic reticulum. Electron microscopy provides a significant demonstration for this assertion." @default.
