- W1449207872 abstract "Predictors of the intention to be tested for the BRCA 1 and 2 genes Since the mid nineties tumour suppressor genes for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer are known. In Germany genetic counselling and testing was offered in a research program established by the German Cancer Foundation. This study examined the intention to be tested for BRCA1/2 mutations and the uptake of the test among a consecutive sample of n = 94 non-affected family members. The design was cross-sectional. The study explored participants’ attitudes toward testing prior to the first counselling session. The majority of participants were strongly determined to get tested. The belief to be able to manage the test result was identified to be a predictor of the intention to be tested. Also, the recommendation of a doctor or a relative influenced the intention to be tested. Although the decision to take up genetic testing was mainly determined by the empirical risk to carry a mutation as ascertained in the genetic counselling, the intention to be tested was also predictive for the take-up. Only 5 % of the high risk persons decided not to be tested because they could not see a personal benefit of testing after the counselling session. Despite the study’s limitations regarding both design and assessment of the variables these results demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary counselling for persons at risk for hereditary cancer." @default.
