- W145005178 abstract "This chapter focuses on sulfoconjugation and sulfohydrolysis. Sulfur has played an important biological role since the beginnings of life on Earth. It is an extremely reactive element and participates in an extraordinary range of chemical linkages in a wide variety of biological compounds. Sulfoconjugates constitute a very diverse and widespread group of compounds, representatives of which are to be found in microorganisms, lower and higher plants, and throughout the animal world. They are so diverse in their distribution and in their chemical nature that very few laboratories have ever considered the group as a whole. Thus, in the field of drug metabolism, the term sulfoconjugate is generally synonymous with the sulfoconjugates of steroids and phenols, whereas the connective tissue biochemist would regard the term as synonymous with the acidic glycosaminoglycans. There have been no reports of sulfohydrolases being active toward arylamine sulfamates, but the spleen enzyme that liberates the N-sulfate groups from heparin is without activity toward phenyl sulfamate, although the latter compound inhibits the activity of the enzyme toward heparin." @default.
