- W145024005 abstract "The human meniscus is a critical element to normal knee struc ture and function. These crescent-shaped cartilages distribute loads, and aid in joint lubrication, stability, congruence and proprioception. An appreciation of the structure and function of the meniscus, along with its related biome-chanics, proves useful in understanding its pathologic states. Various types of meniscus tears are discussed, as well as the basic science and clinical evidence of the healing potential of a tear. While most meniscus tears can be treated with simple debridement, several methods exist for meniscus repair, including suture repairs and device repairs. Accompanying the discussion of techniques, clinical evidence is used to illustrate which meniscal tears are likely to heal successfully and the biomechanical data of each type of repair. A discussion of rehabilitation protocols following meniscus repair examines the benefi ts and risks of early motion, weight bearing and a return to sport. The final section concerns current trends in meniscus repair, and the possible future modalities that may be employed to make meniscus repair easier and more successful." @default.
