- W145296989 abstract "This chapter presents different physical principles for multiple beams-plitting and approaches made to array generation, and it discusses the practically relevant performance parameters in that context. Many methods exist for multiple beams-plitting. They can be classified into systems relying on Fourier transformation, Fresnel diffraction, imaging, and cascaded beams-plitters. These systems can be compared with respect to their splitting ratio, compression ratio, background suppression ratio, homogeneity, light efficiency, modal shape, geometry, and manufacturability. Different approaches have to be judged by the system designer in terms of these parameters with respect to their application. The shape of the partial beams of a multiple beams-plitter is sometimes important to control, especially if the beams are to be coupled into small devices, single-mode fibers, etc. Another special case of beam shaping is cascading of beams-plitters, that is, to use the output of the preceding beams-plitter as input for the next. In this way, the splitting ratios multiply and large arrays may be generated recursively or in the fashion of a tree. The main disadvantage of cascading is the fact that errors accumulate. Any inaccuracy in one stage of the system will show up later at many places. The important asset of cascading is the huge splitting ratio that can be achieved." @default.
