- W14540105 abstract "Researchers throughout the past century have held an avid interest in the responses elicited in humans by exposure to endotoxin. At the turn of the century, this was based on such divergent themes as the physiological sequelae of fever to the therapeutic effects of bacterial products in patients with malignancies. It is now apparent that these clinical problems shared basic mediators and mechanisms of inflammation that were initiated by exposure to bacterial components including endotoxin. Many of the inflammatory responses elicited by endotoxin share final common pathways with other mediators of inflammation. Further, ample data currently exists which has defined a critical role for endotoxin in the pathogenesis of human gram-negative sepsis, shock and multiple organ failure (MOF) [1, 2]. Thus, with almost one hundred years of in vitro and in vivo experiments, why should investigators continue to evaluate host responses to endotoxin?" @default.
