- W145517831 abstract "This chapter reviews glutathione as a coenzyme in intermediary metabolism. Glutathione is widely distributed in animal tissues, plants, and micro-organisms and is present in many cells in very high concentrations. An actual specific need for glutathione (GSH) as an essential nutrient has been established only in a few instances, mainly because most cells appear to be capable of synthesizing the tripeptide from its amino-acid constituents. The fact that glutathione (GSH) is required by some cells for maximal growth and cannot readily be replaced by some other SH compounds might serve as a valuable clue to its metabolic function. The chapter also describes glutathione as a prosthetic group of triose phosphate dehydrogenase. To measure quantitatively total glutathione routinely, a very sensitive test is used." @default.
