- W1455276363 abstract "Publisher Summary Calcium—which transmits electrical signals into biological events—plays a pivotal role in the regulation of multiple cellular functions, such as the release and liberation of transmitters, hormones, local-operating modulators and cytokines, activation of enzymes, gene expression, differentiation, growth, metabolic activity, and pacemaker activity. One way in which the intracellular calcium concentration can be increased rapidly is by the opening of voltage-operated or receptor-sensitive calcium channels, whereas the second way mobilizes calcium from intracellular stores via the phosphoinositide pathway. Release of radioactive acetylcholine from the brain, postganglionic autonomic neurons, and the motor nerve can be measured by a radiolabeling technique in the presence of active acetylcholinesterase. This method allows the pharmacological characterization of calcium channels that are critically involved in the regulation of transmitter release, while at the same time possible postsynaptic effects of calcium channel antagonists do not interfere with the detection method. The opening of different calcium channels having a very particular sphere of influence at the soma and at the terminal is regarded as a discriminative property of communicating neurons." @default.
