- W1456219712 abstract "Weed hosts of plant viruses play an important part in the epidemiology of many diseases of economic significance. It is found that distribution of Plantago species over a diverse range of crops and climates creates a high potential for natural virus acquisition. The potential importance of Plantago species as reservoirs of economically important viruses is greater than that of many weeds because many Plantago species are perennials and thus, can act as overwintering (or oversummering) sources of virus between crop plantings. In addition, plantains are tolerant to infection by many viruses frequently showing no obvious signs of infection. Several virus vector species have been found to overwinter or to reproduce on plantains and Plantago species may therefore act as reservoirs of both viruses and vectors. The viruses affecting Plantago are of varying importance in a wide variety of crops, while the relative importance of plantains as virus reservoirs also varies considerably from one area, crop, or season to another, and with each virus." @default.
