- W1456555466 abstract "In this article, we examine international factors that shape tuberculosis (TB) prevalence rates using cross-national longitudinal panel models. Using data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank, we test the contentions of dependency theorists that structural adjustment leads to a reduction in governmental capacity to provide health services critical to preventing and treating TB. Past global health research has shown that International Monetary Fund (IMF) lending has detrimental effects on government's ability to provide access to basic needs such as clean water and medical technology in poor countries, leading to negative outcomes for infant, child, and maternal mortality. We extend these lines of research with regard to the macro causes of TB prevalence. Our study addresses the macrostructural constraints on governments' ability to combat the global spread of TB in poor countries. We find support for the predictions of dependency theory that IMF structural adjustment lending is detrimental to TB control. We conclude by discussing the theoretical implications of our findings and offer tentative policy implications and possible directions for future research." @default.
