- W1456874171 abstract "On the Kenya coast, the indigenous coastal stemborer,Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand), and the exotic spotted stemborerChilo partellus (Swinhoe), are pests of cereals. The two speciesoccur together occupying similar ecological niches. Earlier studieshave shown that their larvae are difficult to distinguish and thatthe exotic C. partellus may be gradually displacing the indigenousspecies. During this study, comparative larval developmentinvestigations in the laboratory suggested that the shortergeneration time could explain the superior competitiveness of theexotic C. partellus over the indigenous C. orichalcociliellus.A study of morphological characters showed that thestructure of spiracles, mandibular structures, the arrangement ofsetae and number of crochets on the abdominal and caudalprolegs could not be reliably used for distinguishing the twospecies. Asetose tubercles were shown to be useful characters inseparating larvae of the two species. However, the use of asetosetubercles was limited since they were not present in all larvalstages. The character therefore became unreliable for species separation. Hexane soluble cuticular components were studied usinggas chromatography. Chromatograms of the components did notshow any qualitative differences in the peak patterns, nevertheless, quantitative differences were observed. Analysis ofthe quantitative differences suggested that the cuticularcomponents of these species were highly influenced by the dietand/or the environment, and as such, were not a reliable characterfor their identification.Electrophoretic banding patterns to three enzyme systemswere found to be diagnostic. Glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI),Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Glutamate oxaloacetatetransaminase (GOT) on thin starch gel electrophoresis gavedistinct separation between the larvae of the two species. Theseresults showed that starch gel electrophoresis could be used as areliable alternative technique for distinguishing larvae of these twostemborer species, especially in cases where morphologicalcharacters cannot be used." @default.
